Bird & Bear: A Follow Up & Appreciative Note

by William Bortz

Before I get into the thick of things I want to thank those who came out this past Gentlemen’s Night and those who contributed. I know that some of you drove a ways, and with that we want to keep providing all of the men in our community with the resources and conversation that make that drive beyond worth it.

For all those who were not able to make it, Michael Chilton of Trout Unlimited was our speaker and demonstrator this week. Michael painted a beautiful picture of quiet streams filled to the brim with fish, for which his love for fly fishing originated. Michael also covered a lot of basic terminology and technique when it came to casting, fly, specifics, and how to catch not just one, but two large trees (with proper training of course).

Michael showed us the passion he has for his craft not just with his in-depth stories of fishing and inflections, but also with his knowledge. His love for fly fishing goes beyond mastering the skill for himself, but also for the purpose of teaching others what there is to love and learn about fly fishing. This speaks directly to what Bird & Bear aims to do: ‘Recapture the essence of what it means to be a man’, and doing this by sharing, learning, and loving as a community.

Romans 12 tells us to show family affection to one another with brotherly love, and to outdo one another in showing honor.

So let’s continue to do this through smoking pipes, drinking craft beer, oiling our beards, and welcoming more men into this community of ours. On that note, there are a few dates worth mentioning this month:

Thursday June 18th – Bird & Bear @ Mancraft
Hosted by 515 Brewery and Market Day

There are a few more events coming up in future months that you can read more about here.

Be on the lookout for future events and posts. You can stay updated by what Danny and Bird & Bear are doing by subscribing to the blog, following social media sites, or coming out to Gentlemen’s Night each month. As always you can head over to the website to read more about Bird & Bear’s mission and events schedule.

I will leave you all with a quote from C.S. Lewis from his work ‘The Four Loves’, which touches on both the bigger picture and the quiet intricacies involved in community.

“In friendship… we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another… the accident of a topic being raised or not raised as a first meeting- any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to us the beauties of others.”
